Dear friend,

It is important for us to understand, in depth, the reality hidden behind the glossy publicity, promises of development, and online campaigns surrounding the so-called development project planned for the Great Nicobar Islands. Nicobar is not merely a piece of land. It is a unique ecosystem, home to ancient prehistoric forests, coral reefs, rich marine biodiversity including the leatherback sea turtle, rare species such as the Nicobar megapode, and the life, culture, and heritage of indigenous communities such as the Shompen and the Nicobarese, who have lived there for generations. If the balance of nature is disturbed, its impact will not remain confined to Nicobar alone; it will affect the wider environment as well.

If, in the name of development, forests are destroyed, biodiversity is damaged, seas and coastlines are placed in danger, and the rights of indigenous people are restricted, then it becomes our civic responsibility to question such a model and plan of development. With the aim of building public opinion in support of Nicobar and its ecosystem, a public meeting has been organised at the call of the People’s Alliance for Ecological and Democratic Solidarity.
