Solidarity Message - Matrisadan
Solidarity Statement
Today, 9th February, on the tenth day of the indefinite hunger strike of Brahmachari Atmabodhanandaji at Matrisadan Ashram, Haridwar, we express our deep concern, solidarity, and respect, and extend our unequivocal support to his struggle.
This hunger strike, raised against administrative corruption, the mafia system, police inaction, and multiple forms of injustice, and in defence of a free-flowing and pollution-free River Ganga, brings before us a profound moral and civilizational question. The Ganga is not merely a river—the Ganga is the lifeline of India, an inseparable part of its biodiversity, culture, and the everyday lives of its people. For decades, Matrisadan Ashram has carried forward immense sacrifice, spiritual discipline, and resistance to protect the natural flow, purity, and ecological balance of the Ganga. This struggle stands today as a powerful protest against the consumerist and anti-nature model of development.
This hunger strike is, in essence, a silent yet resolute resistance against the dangers of a human-made so-called civilization—against river-destroying projects, unscientific dams, indiscriminate mining, and pollution.
The Ecological Solidarity Movement firmly believes that saving the Ganga requires keeping alive all her tributaries, distributaries, canals, wetlands, lakes, ponds, and natural water systems. If these are destroyed, the very existence of the Ganga—the lifeline of the nation—cannot be sustained. We call upon people across the country to spread the message: “Let the Ganga flow freely.”
We demand:
1. That the natural and uninterrupted flow of the River Ganga be ensured.
2. That all forms of pollution and exploitation of the Ganga and its basin be stopped immediately.
3. That repression and harassment of environmental and river-protection activists be ended without delay. and
4. That the government take immediate and responsible action to address the demands raised by Matrisadan Ashram.
We appeal to people from all walks of life, environmentally conscious citizens, social movements, intellectuals, and the media to widely disseminate this extraordinary and ethical struggle, build solidarity, and join the movement to restore the Ganga to her natural form.
